|
Neurologist caring a patients requiring neurologic critical care should have a decisive role in airway management including determining indications for tracheostomy. Generally accepted benefits of tracheostomy, compared to prolonged translaryngeal intubation, are greater airway security, patient comfort, and pulmonary hygiene. Despite the recent publications addressing whether tracheostomy should be performed earlier, the indications and patient selection remain unclear. Elective tracheostomy can be performed at the bedside in the intensive care unit. Regardless of the subject of operation, neurologist who is caring critically ill patients should be familiar with indications, operative methods, post-operative care, and possible complications of tracheostomy.
